Food hygiene inspection or rating

Inspection due, or your rating dropped? Fix the points that count first.

If an inspection is close, put your effort into records and the way the kitchen is run day to day, because confidence in management is where most points are lost. If your rating has already dropped, fix the problems, keep the evidence, and ask the council for a re-rating visit; you can also add a right to reply or appeal, but the appeal window is short.

What you need

Where to start.

01

Read the officer's letter properly

It lists what they found against each of the three scores: hygiene, structure, and confidence in management. That tells you exactly where the rating was capped.

02

Fix the cheapest high-scoring items first

Missing records, out-of-date allergen information, cleaning schedules nobody signs, a broken seal on a fridge. Most of these cost little and move the score.

03

Keep evidence of every fix

Dated photos, receipts and completed records. A re-rating visit is judged on what is in place and how you show it, not on promises.

04

Ask for a re-rating visit

Once the work is done, request a re-visit from the council. In England councils may charge for it, so make sure everything is finished first.

Package

Keep Your 5

Open kitchens that want to stay at a 5 — or get back to one

£125 a month

Rolling monthly. One month's notice, no long-term contract

The risk
Your rating is public, on your door and online. If it drops, getting re-rated takes time: where the council does not charge, the visit can come up to six months after the inspection.
What we do
Joanne runs a mock inspection every quarter, keeps your records and allergen matrix up to date when the menu changes, and helps if an officer calls.
The result
Problems are found by us, not the officer, and your records are ready whenever someone asks. No long-term contract.

What's included

  • A mock inspection every quarter, with a written report
  • Food safety records and allergen matrix updated when your menu changes
  • Phone and email support between visits

Common questions

Straight answers.

My rating has dropped. What are my options?

There are three safeguards. You can appeal if you think the rating is wrong, but the window is short, so act quickly. You can publish a right to reply alongside your rating. And once you have fixed the problems, you can ask the council for a re-rating visit, which councils in England may charge for. The Food Standards Agency's page on business safeguards sets out the current rules.

Can you speak to the council for us?

We help you prepare the evidence and the request, and we can be there on the day if that helps. The rating itself is always the officer's decision, and the relationship with your council stays yours.

What is a mock inspection?

Joanne walks your kitchen the way an environmental health officer would, scores it against the same three areas, and gives you a written action plan with the quickest wins first. It costs from £325 as a single visit, or comes every quarter with Keep Your 5.

Is there a contract for Keep Your 5?

No long-term contract. It is £125 a month, rolling monthly, and you can stop with one month's notice.
